چکیده

ÐQuasi-static and dynamic compression and three-point bending tests have been carried out on Haliotis rufescens (abalone) shells. The mechanical response of the abalone shell is correlated with its microstructure and damage mechanisms. The mechanical response is found to vary signi®cantly from specimen to specimen and requires the application of Weibull statistics in order to be quantitatively evaluated. The abalone shell exhibited orientation dependence of strength, as well as signi®cant strain-rate sensitivity; the failure strength at loading rates between 10 10 and 25 10 GPa/s was approx. 50% higher than the quasi-static strength. The compressive strength when loaded perpendicular to the shell surface was approx. 50% higher than parallel to the shell surface. The compressive strength of abalone is 1.5±3 times the tensile strength (as determined from ̄exural tests), in contrast with monolithic ceramics, for which the compressive strength is typically an order-of-magnitude greater than the tensile strength. Quasi-static compressive failure occurred gradually, in a mode sometimes described as ``graceful failure''. The shear strength of the organic/ceramic interfaces was determined to be approx. 30 MPa by means of a shear test. Considerable inelastic deformation of the organic layers (up to a shear strain of 0.4) preceded failure. Crack de ̄ection, delocalization of damage, plastic microbuckling (kinking), and viscoplastic deformation of the organic layers are the most important mechanisms contributing to the unique mechanical properties of this shell. The plastic microbuckling is analysed in terms of the equations proposed by Argon (Treatise of Materials Science and Technology. Academic Press, New York, 1972, p. 79) and Budiansky (Comput. Struct. 1983, 16, 3). 7 2000 Acta Metallurgica Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Green abalone, Haliotis fulgens infected with the agent of withering syndrome do not express disease signs under a temperature regime permissive for red abalone, Haliotis rufescens

All California abalone species have been shown to be susceptible to infection with the bacterial agent of abalone withering syndrome (WS), although expression of signs of the disease may vary between species and with environmental conditions. We examined thermal modulation of WS expression in green abalone Haliotis fulgens at temperatures mimicking El Niño (18.0°C) and La Niña (14.2°C) events i...

The importance of flow and settlement cues to larvae of the abalone, Haliotis rufescens Swainson.

In flow tank experiments, I tested the relative importance of active and passive processes to larvae settling on manufactured casts that were hydrodynamically rough at a small scale (mm to <1 cm). I predefined two distinct regions of small-scale flow that I used to manipulate larval settlement behaviour of the red abalone Haliotis rufescens Swainson. The larvae show a stringent settlement respo...

Fishing from past to present: continuity and resilience of red abalone fisheries on the Channel Islands, California.

Archaeological data from coastal shell middens provide a window into the structure of ancient marine ecosystems and the nature of human impacts on fisheries that often span millennia. For decades Channel Island archaeologists have studied Middle Holocene shell middens visually dominated by large and often whole shells of the red abalone (Haliotis rufescens). Here we use modern ecological data, ...

EFFECT OF pH ON GENE EXPRESSION AND THERMAL TOLERANCE OF EARLY LIFE HISTORY STAGES OF RED ABALONE (HALIOTIS RUFESCENS)

A growing body of research on calcifying marine invertebrates suggests that ocean acidification will have deleterious effects on development and various physiological processes in these organisms. In laboratory experiments designed to mimic seawater chemistry in future oceans, we examined the effect of pH reduction, driven by the carbon dioxide (CO2) acidification of seawater, on larvae of the ...

Organic interlamellar layers, mesolayers and mineral nanobridges: contribution to strength in abalone (Haliotis rufescence) nacre.

The contributions of mesolayers, organic interlamellar layers and nanoasperities/mineral bridges to the strength of nacre from red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) shell nacre are investigated. Samples were demineralized and deproteinized to separate the organic and mineral components, respectively. Tensile tests were performed on both the isolated organic constituent and the isolated mineral. The ...
